Close to the Barbican, on the walkway above Moorgate Underground station, the City Boot is a traditional wine bar from Davy’s of London. A light and airy place, it serves a good range of well-filled sandwiches, pates, and cheeses. With charming and attentive service, the dining room also provides more substantial typically English fare. The City Boot has an excellent wine list, including a fine range of Davy’s own label house wines. A splendid range of champagne is always available, as are a number of vintage Ports, which are decanted daily and available by the bottle or glass. Devonshire Terrace – European Restaurant – Aldgate, London

The Devonshire Terrace Restaurant is a study in making great use of available space. Stylish wooden booths and striped banquettes bask below atmospheric, overhead lighting, close to the bar and the separate smokers and non-smokers terraces. For private dining, there are four Grey Goose rooms that can be part of the restaurant’s bustle or be screened off with walnut doors. The food is modern and exciting; you might try crab with mango, avocado and cherry tomato sauce or broad bean and pea risotto or even the restaurant’s signature dish of Devonshire Terrace sausages with purple mash and onions. The wine list is wide-ranging to complement the various cooking styles and a three-course meal here should cost around £45 per person.
